Chapter 24

“It says here that a witch was able to open a portal to another realm in the 1950s,” Daphne said. She lay on her stomach in the middle of her bedroom with Dolly looming over her shoulder. The morning sun wafted into the room through the open window. “Do you know who that’s talking about?”

“I heard rumors about this feat long ago, but I didn’t know whether to believe it. To me, it sounded too incredible to believe. I didn’t know what to think.”

“According to Renee, it was documented somewhere.” Daphne placed the document down. “How did she figure this out? It’s amazing.”

“I don’t know, but it makes me a bit worried.”

“Why? Is it because this information is readily accessible to any mundane who wants to dig deeper?”

“Precisely. On one hand, I think it’s harmless. They can create their little theories and postulations on our abilities all they want, they can’t do anything about our magic. However, with more evidence that witchcraft exists, the more they’re going to want to suppress us once they have the chance.”

“Yeah. I’m a bit worried about that, too. Do you know the identity of the witch who opened the portal?”

“No, unfortunately. However, I think it’s good that her identity is kept hidden. She would have been hounded by witches and mundanes alike. I don’t think you realize the amount of power you need to accomplish something like that. It’s truly indescribable.”

“What if Renee managed to figure this out through word of mouth?”

“Can she publish something like that in an academic paper? Leaving her claims without a legitimate source?”

“I don’t know. Maybe I’ll ask Thomas how that process works because it’s beyond me right now.” Daphne rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. “Lizzy and I had an eventful night, if you were wondering.”

“You came back, and you seemed shaken up.”

“That woman, Dimitria, tried to accuse us of being Renee’s killers. It nearly worked! I had to stun them all with a spell so that Lizzy and I could escape.”

“So, the woman had malicious intentions against you all along?”

“I don’t know. It’s likely that she made that stuff up in the moment because the other members in her organization accused her of being involved in Renee’s murder. They mentioned how Dimitria had some of Renee’s artifacts in her possession.”

“She stole them from her, then?”

“Maybe. I don’t know. I should have asked more questions when I had the chance, but that whole place gave me the creeps. I still get goosebumps thinking about it. They looked at us with pure hatred in their eyes, Dolly. I can’t describe it.”

“And aren’t these the people who supposedly love witches and magic so much?”

“Apparently, but Dimitria poisoned their minds to think that we hurt Renee in an attempt to hide our true identities from getting exposed to the public.”

“What a shame. They all fell under the influence of that woman. I believe you should let Detective Carver know about what happened. She sounds like a danger to society at large.
